GIRLS HOOPS: Lady Dragons improve to 2-1 in region

CORRY – Rebounding from a loss to Mercyhurst Prep on Tuesday, Warren’s girls basketball team is 10-2 overall and 2-1 in Region 6 with a 42-31 win at Corry Thursday.

But the game was “ugly,” according to Warren coach Lisa Ruhlman.

She said teams have to play at a high level no matter whether the opponent is in first or last – as Corry currently is at 0-3 in region.

Warren and Corry both started slowly with a 6-2 first quarter, and the Lady Dragons led 21-10 at halftime, then held on.

Jaimie Eaton didn’t get to the line for the first time this year, but led Warren with 13 points, D.J. Hahn had six points and six rebounds, and Taylor Mineweaser had six assists.

Saegertown 49, Youngsville 29

Youngsville built some early momentum, but Saegertown snatched it away late in the second quarter of a 49-29 Panthers victory Thursday at Youngsville High School.

The Eagles shot the ball well and defended closely during a first quarter that saw Youngsville lead by as many as five points before ultimately settling for a 12-9 lead through a period. Things started to change in the second stanza.

Youngsville (2-10) went cold from the floor and Saegertown began heating up as the Panthers took their first lead of the game in the first half’s closing moments. The visiting Panthers had a 23-20 lead at intermission.

The Panthers took firm control of the game early in the second half, starting the third quarter on an 8-0 run to push the lead into double figures. Youngsville was held to just four points in the third quarter and Saegertown led 36-24 with a quarter to play.

The fourth quarter looked a lot like the third with the Panthers holding a 13-5 edge and winning the game by 20.

Kennedy Cratty was the only Youngsville player in double figures with 12 points. Twin sister Karissa Cratty and Katie Chuzie added six points each.

Saegertown won a low-scoring junior varsity game, 29-21. Jorie Clark paced the Youngsville effort with eight points.

Youngsville will try to get back on the winning track Tuesday when it visits Maplewood.
