Plans underway for spring Mom’s Shower

The Community Moms’ Shower, hosted by Forest-Warren Human Services, isn’t until April 20, but preparation for the event has been underway for a while.

Tammy Rice, the early intervention coordinator for Forest-Warren Human Services, has been contacting speakers, donors, and other potential participants since September.

“I sent an email out to organizations and received a very good response,” said Rice of her first efforts to gain sponsors. The first planning meeting was held in November with organizations that were able to attend.

According to Rice, she first got the idea from Hillary Clinton’s baby safety shower and the idea just took off from there. “I want to show what’s out there for the kids,” she said. “I think it will be worthwhile for the moms who attend.”

The event is for moms-to-be or moms of children under three years of age.

So why hold this event?

Rice explained, “For every person who knows what early intervention is, there’s one who doesn’t. A lot of people don’t know what’s available to them, especially young families and families who are new to the area. My hope is that they learn something about keeping their child safe something they didn’t know before. There are things at home you wouldn’t even think about, but are a danger to young children.”

Volunteer speakers are slated to give 15-minute presentations on topics such as infant bathing, reading with infants and toddlers, and nutrition, health and wellness on a budget.

In addition to the speakers, attendees will be provided with literature on general health and safety provided by the Center for Disease Control as well as local agency information. Also included in the packets will be children’s books.

Door prizes will be handed out to those who attend, including gift baskets, hand-made blankets and afghans, baby monitors, gas cards donated by United Refining and other prizes, as well as the grand prize a Graco Lite Rider stroller, purchased with money donated by the ARC of Warren-Forest County.

There is limited space for the event, so participants will be limited to the first 40 who register. Registration for the event at noon April 20 will begin on March 1 and end on April 12.
