Jerman first-team PFN all-star

Members of both the Eisenhower Knights and Warren Dragons’ football teams were well represented when the Pennsylvania Football News (PFN) selection committee recently selected their top three teams on offense and defense for the recently completed 2012 football season.

Coaches were invited to nominate deserving players and the PFN selection committee then narrowed down the list of well over 1,000 nominations.

All told, one Warren Dragon and six Eisenhower Knights were selected to the 2012 teams.

Despite being the only Warren Dragon selected to the Class AAA team, Warren’s Austin Jerman was the lone county first-team selection, being named as a defensive back.

Jerman finished his final season for Warren with a team-high eight interceptions along with one fumble recovery and one blocked field goal. He compiled 122 return yards. In addition, Jerman was second on the team with 89 tackles.

Despite not receiving recognition at quarterback, Jerman wrapped up one of the most prolific passing careers in District 10 history. The senior – who was also named to the Associated Press’ all-state team – was 146-of-246 for 2,088 yards with 28 TD and eight picks during 2012. He finished his career as the most prolific passer in Warren history and was only the second quarterback in D-10 history to throw for over 2,000 yards in a season.

The District 10 Class A Region 2 champion Knights – under the direction of veteran coach Jim Penley – boasted an incredible seven PFN all-state selections led by Class A third-team choices Nathan O’Brien and Jared Flaisman.

During his senior season in the blue and gold, O’Brien caught 28 passes for 677 yards, averaging just over 24 yards per catch. Nine of O’Brien’s catches went for touchdowns – a single season record for the Knights.

Flaisman, a junior, is a two-time region all-star and a three-year starter for the Knights. Flaisman helped anchor a line that led the way during a record-setting season for Eisenhower. The Knights averaged 287 yards rushing a game in 2012 and 396.6 total yards per contest – both new school records.

Four Eisenhower Knights were named to the honorable mention list, including senior running back John Pascuzzi, sophomore offensive lineman Jake Spetz, junior linebacker Alex Johnson and junior defensive back Rob Wilston.

Pascuzzi became Eisenhower’s all-time leading rusher in 2012 and narrowly missed the school’s single season rushing mark with 210 carries for 1,582 yards and 17 touchdowns. Pascuzzi also caught seven passes for another 127 yards.

Spetz was a region all-star on both the offensive and defensive lines and was a member of the Knights’ dominant front.

Johnson led the Knights in tackles with 147 during the 2012 season. Of those 147 tackles, 18.5 of them were for a loss. Johnson also forced two fumbles while recovering one, had one interception and blocked one punt for the Knights.

Wilston recorded 64 tackles for Eisenhower, including 10 for negative yardage. He also forced two fumbles, recovered two fumbled and picked off two passes. One of the interceptions was returned for a touchdown.
