Former Warren standout making waves in Virginia
Former Warren Area High School District 10 champion hurdler Summer Walter is making waves as a Bayside Marlin at Bayside High School in Virginia, and the senior is currently looking at East Carolina University, James Madison University and Norfolk State University for track and field.
This winter, Walter broke the school record in the 400-meter run (1:02.30), tied the school record in the pole vault (9-6), and has set personal-best marks in six track and field events (55 meters, 7.68 seconds; 300 meters, 43.42; 400 meters, 1:02.30; 500 meters, 1:23.58; 55 hurdles, 8.79; 60 hurdles, 10.16).
While at Bayside, she has been named an all-state Group AAA pole vaulter, was a 300-meter hurdle champion at the Beach District Track and Field Championships, and an Eastern Region qualifier in the 55-meter indoor hurdles (all-Eastern Region) and indoor high jump.
Walter has been a New Balance Nationals Emerging Elite qualifier in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles, a heptathlon champion at the USTF Junior Olympic Region 3 Championships, and All-American at the USTF Junior Olympic National Championships.
This season, she won the long jump at the CNU Winter Showcase at Christopher Newport University, and was voted “Best All-Around” by her senior class for Senior Superlatives.
Walter competed in cross country in the fall at Bayside High School, with a 5K personal-best time of 20:55.91.
She will be attending the prestigious VA Tech HS Invitational Super Bowl weekend.
