Robert W. (“Red”) Newman, 89, formerly of Sheffield, passed away on January 4, 2013, at Warren Manor. He was born on July 28, 1923 in Clarendon. He lived in Sheffield most of his life.

Mr. Newman was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corp, serving in the Pacific. He was a Past Commander of the Warren American Legion Post 135. He also was a life member of the NRA Association, a VFW member, a member of the Kalbfus Gun Club, the Irvine Rod and Gun Club, and a life member of the Penna. Gun Collectors. He taught hunter safety courses for many years. He was an active member of the Rotary Club for over 35 years, and served as president. He also served as the president of the Warren AAA organization and was on the Board of Directors. Mr. Newman also was part of the YMCA Board of Directors for many years, especially working with the YMCA Day Camp program.

Mr. Newman was a tank engineer designer by profession, and worked at the Penn Furnace in Warren for many years. He was a life member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Mr. Newman worked for the Trailmobile Company out of Chicago for many years, and also worked at the Allegheny Valve Co. in Warren, returning there at age 80, to work as a consultant.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Maxine (Jewell) Newman, who passed away in February 2008; his parents, Gust and Olive Newman; a brother, Gale Newman; an infant daughter and a great grandson.

Mr. Newman is survived by his three children: Robert C. Newman and wife Cherrie of Auburn, WA; daughter Jeanne Vanderhoof of Sheffield; daughter Nancy (Mrs. Thomas) Wargo of Lorain, Ohio; brothers Clare E. Newman of Arcadia, California; Charles Newman of Warren; and Boyd Newman of Leesburg, FL; 3 grandchildren (Dean Newman; Jennifer Newman Jewell; Jody Vanderhoof and wife Crystal); also 3 greatgrandchildren (Heather, Shadoe, and Reagan).

Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, 1003 Penna. Ave, Warren, PA on Tuesday, Jan. 8th, from 5 to 8 pm and one hour prior to the funeral service to be held there at 11:00 on Wed., Jan. 9th, with Rev. Mark Rusnak, chaplain, ASERA Care Hospice, officiating.

Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery. Full military honors will be provided by the Sheffield Clarendon VFW and active duty U.S. Army personnel.
