WRESTLING: Dragons rout visiting Oil City

Oil City won the first two matches of the night before Warren stormed back to win 10 of the final 11 bouts during a 54-13 victory over the Oilers on Senior Night Thursday at Warren Area High School.

“Chris (McNeal) really gave us a spark with a quick pin at 195 pounds and we clicked off some quick pins after that. It was nice to get a win, but we still have a lot of improving that we can do.”

The visiting Oilers won the first two matches to jump out to a 7-0 lead in the team score. However, it didn’t take the Dragons long to bounce back and take firm control of the match.

Warren’s first victory of the night came at 152 pounds where Garrett Smead executed takedown after takedown, building a 19-7 lead in the first period before pinning Oil City’s Jacob Zdarko in 1:39. In the next match, 160-pounder Cody Gunn wrestled smart in a 5-1 decision over the Oilers’ Eli Lewis. Gunn’s win put Warren up for good with a 9-7 lead.

The lead quickly swelled to 30-7 with wins by 170-pounder Derek Reagle, 182-pounder Dan Henry, 195-pounder McNeal and 220-pounder Alex Streich. Reagle narrowly missed a major decision with an 11-4 win over Brandon Stover. Henry then received a forfeit before McNeal kicked off a series of quick pins with a 33-second pin of Eric Streeter. Streich needed just 1:05 to pin Logan Johnson in his 220-pound bout.

After an Oilers victory at heavyweight, the Dragons quickly got back on track by winning the final four matches of the evening.

Glyn Mahood, a freshman, pinned his opponent with just five seconds remaining in the first period of his 106-pound match. After a double forfeit at 113 pounds, Warren’s Seth Johnson won at 120 pounds in just 38 seconds.

The Dragons (11-4) finished the night with standout D.J. Fehlman receiving a forfeit at 126 pounds and sophomore Jason Peterson pinning his opponent in the final 30 seconds of the 132-pound match.

Warren has a difficult ahead this weekend when it competes at the annual Tool City Tournament in Meadville.
